Three Tips for New Artists Accepting Art Commissions

Here are three tips for new artists accepting art commissions. First, timing is key. Be active and follow up when someone expresses the interest to buy one of your pieces, but cannot make a deposit or payment right away.

Second, state your licensing terms clearly and have an artist’s agreement signed by both parties to protect you from unwarranted situations. Finally, be sure to ask for a payment upfront. It is fair to ask for as much as 50% upfront to cover the cost of your materials and time. Some artists prefer 30% down and a couple of instalments.
